Pakistan is expanding its optical fiber network through cross-border projects with China and a nationwide five-year fiber expansion plan to enhance digital connectivity and ICT infrastructure.

China-Pakistan Cross-Border Fiber Optic Project

The China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Cable Project is an 820 km optical fiber line connecting Khunjerab Pass on the China-Pakistan border to Rawalpindi. Initiated under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the project was financed with a $44 million concessional loan from China and implemented by Huawei Technologies. Construction began in 2015, with groundbreaking in Gilgit in May 2016, and the project was completed and inaugurated in July 2018 by Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk . Chinese and Pakistani firms are investing in Tier-3 and Tier-4 data centers in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad to support cloud computing, AI, and business analytics.
