Fiber Optic Communication 1977

1977 marked the first commercial and experimental demonstrations of fiber-optic communication, proving its viability for high-speed, long-distance data transmission.

In the United States, AT&T conducted the first commercial test of fiber-optic telecommunications on May 11, 1977, in downtown Chicago. This experimental setup used a 2.4-kilometer cable capable of transmitting voice, data, and video signals as pulses of laser light through glass fibers, carrying the equivalent of 672 voice channels simultaneously . The test demonstrated that fiber optics could handle high traffic in urban environments, offering advantages over copper wiring, including reduced electrical interference, lower maintenance, and higher capacity . Simultaneously, in the United Kingdom, a technical trial between Hitchin and Stevenage demonstrated that optical fibers could transmit high-speed data over long distances. This trial, conducted by the Standard Telecommunications Laboratories (STL) in collaboration with the British Post Office, successfully operated a link at 140 Mbit/s, the highest digital transmission rate at the time, and validated the theoretical predictions of Charles Kao and George Hockham regarding low-loss glass fibers . This experiment was a critical step toward the adoption of fiber optics in the UK and contributed to Charles Kao receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics. Other notable developments in 1977 included General Telephone and Electronics transmitting live telephone traffic at 6 Mbit/s in Long Beach, California, and experimental deployments in Turin, Italy, where a 9-kilometer fiber link was tested at 140 Mbit/s . These demonstrations collectively showed that fiber optics could support both urban and long-distance communication, laying the foundation for global adoption in the 1980s. Overall, 1977 was a pivotal year in fiber-optic communication, marking the transition from theoretical research to practical, high-capacity, and reliable optical networks, which would eventually revolutionize telecommunications worldwide .
