It involves aligning the fiber cores precisely and using an electric arc to melt and fuse them into a single continuous fiber. This creates a permanent joint with minimal signal loss and back reflection, making it ideal for high-speed data transmission in offices, data centers, and enterprise networks . Procedure:

  1. Strip the protective coating from the fiber ends.
  2. Clean the bare fibers with alcohol wipes.
  3. Use a fusion splicer to automatically align the fiber cores.
  4. Apply an electric arc to fuse the fibers.
  5. Protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve to restore mechanical strength. Advantages:

  2. Insert the fibers into a mechanical splice assembly.
  3. Apply index-matching gel to reduce light loss.
  4. Secure the assembly with a snap or adhesive cover. Advantages:
  • Quick and easy to perform
  • Lower initial equipment cost
  • Can be used for temporary or emergency connections Disadvantages:
  • Higher insertion loss (typically 0.2–0.75 dB)
  • Less durable over time
  • Slightly higher back reflection compared to fusion splicing
