Assemble the lightning protection distribution box

Assembling a lightning protection distribution box involves installing surge protective devices (SPDs), connecting earthing and neutral busbars, and wiring the incoming and outgoing circuits according to safety standards.

Step 1: Safety Precautions

Before starting, disconnect the main power supply and verify that all conductors are de-energized. Apply Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves, safety glasses, and protective shoes to prevent electrical hazards .

Step 2: Install Busbars

Mount the neutral busbar and earthing busbar inside the distribution box. These busbars serve as the central points for connecting neutral and protective earth (PE) conductors from the SPDs and other devices .

Step 3: Install Circuit Breakers

Install the main air switch (three-phase or single-phase depending on your system) and any sub-circuit breakers for load distribution. Identify the switching power supply side (incoming power) and the load side (outgoing circuits) to determine SPD placement .

Step 4: Install Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)

  • Type I SPD: Installed upstream of the electricity meter if external lightning protection exists, or downstream if no external protection is present. Connect both earth terminals: one to the building's equipotential bonding and the other to the PE conductor .
  • Type II SPD: Typically installed in the main or sub-distribution board to limit voltage surges to below 4 kV. Connect the SPD as close as possible to the busbars with short, thick earthing wires (≤ 0.5 m) to minimize residual voltage .
  • Type III SPD: Installed directly upstream of sensitive devices to limit voltage to below 2.5 kV . SPDs can be mounted on DIN rails or directly in the cable conduit. Ensure the V-connection or single branch wiring is used to connect incoming and outgoing cables directly to the SPD terminals .

Step 5: Wiring Connections

  • Connect live (L), neutral (N), and earth (PE) wires from the main supply to the respective terminals on the SPDs and circuit breakers .
  • Ensure short, direct connections to minimize inductive voltage drops, which can reduce SPD effectiveness .
  • Verify that all connections are tight and secure.

Step 6: Testing and Commissioning

  • After assembly, perform a trial operation by switching on the main breaker and checking the SPD status indicators. A red window typically indicates a need to replace the pluggable SPD module .
  • Confirm that normal current flows correctly and that SPDs discharge surge currents during voltage spikes.

Step 7: Final Checks

  • Ensure all SPDs are properly earthed and that the equipotential bonding is intact.
  • Verify that the distribution box complies with IEC 61643 standards and local electrical codes .
  • Document the installation for maintenance and future inspections. By following these steps, the lightning protection distribution box will safely protect electrical installations from surges caused by lightning strikes or switching events, ensuring both equipment safety and compliance with international standards .
