Dual-wire working principle of fiber optic sensor

A dual-wire fiber optic sensor uses two optical fibers—one for transmitting light to the sensing element and another for returning the modulated signal to the detector, enabling precise measurement of physical quantities.

Working Principle

In a dual-wire (or dual-fiber) fiber optic sensor, the system typically consists of a light source, two optical fibers, a sensing element (transducer), and a detector. One fiber carries light from the source to the sensing element, while the second fiber returns the light after it has been modulated by the measurand, such as pressure, temperature, strain, or displacement . This configuration is often used in extrinsic fiber optic sensors, where the sensing occurs outside the fiber itself, and the fiber primarily serves as a light conduit . The sensing element interacts with the light in a way that changes one or more optical parameters—intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization—depending on the physical quantity being measured . For example, a reflective diaphragm may alter the intensity of the reflected light in response to pressure, or a fiber Bragg grating may shift the wavelength of light in response to strain. The detector at the receiving end measures these changes and converts them into an electrical signal for processing. The dual-fiber setup ensures that the transmitted and received signals are separated, reducing interference and improving measurement accuracy, especially in environments with high electromagnetic noise or long-distance sensing requirements .

Advantages of Dual-Wire Configuration

  • Improved Signal Integrity: By separating the transmit and receive paths, signal loss and back-reflection effects are minimized.
  • Enhanced Sensitivity: The system can detect small changes in the optical signal more accurately.
  • Remote Sensing Capability: Dual fibers allow the sensor to be placed far from the electronics, useful in hazardous or hard-to-reach locations.
  • Multiplexing Potential: Multiple dual-wire sensors can be deployed along a single network using wavelength or time-domain techniques .

Applications

Dual-wire fiber optic sensors are widely used in industrial monitoring, structural health monitoring, aerospace, and chemical sensing, where precise, interference-free measurements are critical . They are particularly advantageous in high-voltage or explosive environments, as the optical fibers do not conduct electricity . In summary, the dual-wire fiber optic sensor operates by transmitting light through one fiber, modulating it via a sensing element, and returning it through a second fiber to a detector, providing accurate, remote, and interference-resistant measurements of physical quantities.
