Double busbar segmented connection busbar

The double busbar segmented connection method uses two busbars per bay, allowing flexible load transfer, fault isolation, and maintenance without interrupting service.

Overview

In a double busbar segmented system, each feeder or circuit can be connected to either of two busbars, typically referred to as Bus-I and Bus-II. One bus often serves as the main bus, while the other can act as a main or transfer bus, enabling any feeder to be switched between buses through transfer isolators without affecting other circuits . This segmentation improves reliability and operational flexibility compared to single bus or single bus with sectionalizer systems .

Key Components

Each bay in a double busbar system typically includes:

  • Main Isolators (Disconnect Switches): Connect the feeder to Bus-I or Bus-II.
  • Load Isolators: Positioned on the load side to isolate the feeder.
  • Transfer Isolators: Allow direct connection of a feeder to the alternate bus (transfer bus) without opening the feeder circuit breaker.
  • Circuit Breakers: Protect the feeder and allow switching operations.
  • Bus Coupler: Connects Bus-I and Bus-II, enabling load transfer and fault management.
  • Earth Switches: Provide grounding for maintenance .

Operation and Switching

Under normal conditions, feeders are distributed between the two buses. If maintenance or a fault occurs:

  1. Load Transfer: A feeder can be shifted from Bus-I to Bus-II by closing the transfer isolator and opening the main isolator, without interrupting other feeders .
  2. Fault Isolation: In case of a bus fault, only the affected bus section is disconnected, while the other bus continues supplying power to its feeders .
  3. Bus Coupler Use: The bus coupler breaker can be closed to interconnect buses temporarily for load balancing or emergency operation .

Advantages

  • High Reliability: Faults on one bus do not interrupt all feeders.
  • Operational Flexibility: Load can be transferred between buses for maintenance or emergency conditions.
  • Maintenance Without Outage: Individual bays or bus sections can be serviced without shutting down the entire substation.
  • Enhanced Protection: Segmentation allows differential or overcurrent protection to be applied per bus section, improving fault detection and clearance speed .

Applications

This method is commonly used in medium- to high-voltage substations, especially where continuity of supply is critical, such as:

  • Transmission substations
  • Industrial plants with multiple feeders
  • Distribution substations requiring high operational flexibility

Summary

The double busbar segmented connection method provides a robust solution for substations requiring high reliability and flexibility. By using two busbars per bay, along with isolators, transfer buses, and bus couplers, it allows for efficient load management, fault isolation, and maintenance operations without widespread service interruptions, making it a preferred choice for critical power systems .
