The production of fiber optic cables begins with creating a preform, a solid glass rod made from high-purity silica, boron, germanium, and phosphorus. The raw materials are melted at temperatures exceeding 3,000°C and solidified into the preform. This preform is then drawn into thin optical fibers, with precise control over diameter and tension. After drawing, fibers are coated with a protective layer to guard against moisture, abrasion, and environmental damage, ensuring durability and performance .

Installation Steps

Installing fiber optic cables involves careful planning and execution. The first step is a site survey to identify endpoints, equipment rooms, and potential obstacles. Conduits, innerducts, or tray systems are designed to route the cables safely. Cables are then pulled and secured, taking care to avoid sharp bends or excessive tension that could degrade signal quality. Finally, fibers are terminated and tested using tools like fusion splicers to ensure minimal signal loss and compliance with industry standards such as ANSI/NECA/FOA-301 and TIA/EIA-568 .

Fusion splicing joins two fibers permanently using an electric arc, creating a continuous light path with minimal reflection. The process involves stripping the fiber jacket, cleaning the exposed fiber, aligning the fibers in a splicer, and performing the fusion. Proper handling, including maintaining a bending radius greater than 30 mm and avoiding tension, is critical to prevent damage . For home or office connections, fiber cables are plugged into an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), then connected to a compatible router via Ethernet, followed by powering on devices and verifying connectivity .
