Requirements for Handling and Unloading Communication Optical Cables

Proper unloading of optical fiber cables requires careful handling of cable drums, adherence to minimum bend radius and tensile limits, and compliance with separation and installation standards to prevent damage and ensure reliable operation.

Handling and Unloading Cable Drums

  • Drum Orientation: Always keep cable drums upright during storage and movement to prevent entanglement and damage to cable layers .
  • Lifting: Use a shaft through the drum center and a spreader beam when lifting. Avoid ropes or chains that can damage drum flanges .
  • Forklift Use: Ensure forks are longer than the drum width, tilt the mast to keep the drum secure, and raise forks at least 6–8 inches from the ground before moving .
  • Spacing: Maintain sufficient space between drums to prevent contact and damage during transport .

Cable Handling Precautions

  • Bend Radius: Never bend the cable below its minimum bend radius. Typically, the minimum radius under load is 20× the cable diameter, and 15× the diameter when unloaded .
  • Tensile Strength: Do not exceed the cable's maximum tensile load during pulling or handling .
  • Twisting and Pinching: Avoid twisting, squeezing, or pinching the cable, as this can cause permanent fiber damage and increased attenuation .
  • Connector Protection: Keep connectors free from contamination and scratches during handling .

Preparation for Installation

  • Cable Length: Ensure the cable length accounts for distances between splice points, slack storage, and any additional length needed for racking or splicing .
  • Consult OSP Engineer: Never cut or modify cable lengths without consulting the responsible Outside Plant (OSP) engineer .
  • Separation from Electrical Conductors: Underground or building-entry cables must maintain proper separation from power or Class 1 circuits, typically at least 12 inches unless installed in raceways or metal-sheathed conduits .

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all local codes and standards for underground or building-entry installations, including protective conduits and barriers to prevent physical or environmental damage .
  • Use proper pulling grips for pre-connected cables and avoid pulling on connectors .
  • Ensure personnel are trained in fiber optic handling to minimize risk of cable damage and maintain network reliability . By following these guidelines, optical fiber cables can be safely unloaded, stored, and prepared for installation while minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring long-term performance.
