Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a fiber-optic technology that increases data transmission capacity by sending multiple independent signals simultaneously over a single optical fiber using different wavelengths of light.

Overview

WDM is a method used in fiber-optic communications to combine multiple optical carrier signals onto a single fiber, with each signal assigned a unique wavelength (color) of laser light. This allows bidirectional communication and significantly multiplies the capacity of existing fiber infrastructure without laying additional fibers, making it cost-effective and scalable for high-speed networks .

How WDM Works

Each data stream is converted into pulses of laser light at a specific wavelength. A multiplexer (MUX) at the transmitter combines these wavelengths into a single fiber, while a demultiplexer (DEMUX) at the receiver separates them back into individual signals. This is analogous to turning a single-lane road into a multi-lane highway, allowing multiple data streams to travel simultaneously without interference .

Types of WDM

  1. Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
    • Uses wide channel spacing, typically around 20 nm.
    • Supports fewer channels (usually fewer than 18).
    • Cost-effective and suitable for short-distance applications like metro networks.
    • Can use uncooled lasers, reducing power consumption .
  2. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
    • Uses very narrow channel spacing, often 0.4 nm or 50 GHz.
    • Supports a large number of channels (modern systems can exceed 160).
    • Requires precise, temperature-stabilized lasers and often uses Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) for long-distance transmission.
    • Ideal for long-haul and ultra-long-haul networks, such as internet backbones .
