How It Works

Scanning spectrometers typically use a single-pixel detector that moves across the spectrum. A common design is the Czerny-Turner configuration, which employs two concave mirrors and a diffraction grating:

  • The first concave mirror collimates incoming light from the entrance slit.
  • The diffraction grating disperses the light into its component wavelengths.
  • The second concave mirror focuses the dispersed light onto the detector, which moves to scan across the spectrum . This scanning mechanism allows high-resolution measurements, often achieving 1 nm resolution or better, depending on the optical setup and detector used .
